Rolling With the Punches

Two inches of snow shut down Charleston last week. School closed, nanny couldn't make it, routines went out the window. Peak chaos.

But between Zoom calls and makeshift entertainment, I caught my kids' faces lighting up at the "blizzard" outside. Sometimes the broken routine brings the best moments.

The real win, though? My wife and I trading breaks when we saw the other hitting their limit. Taking that walk when frustration crept in. Finding time for a quick workout between the madness.

Because parenting isn't about perfect routines - it's about adapting when they break. And sometimes that means watching your kids discover snow while you're on mute in a meeting.

Jim Valvano

Before the legendary NC State championship, before the iconic ESPY speech, Jim Valvano was just a dad trying to show his three daughters what it means to chase dreams.

He often credited his own father's belief in him as the greatest gift he received - and he paid that forward.

While most remember Jimmy V for his "don't give up" spirit on the basketball court, his three daughters remember a dad who brought that same energy home. Between coaching national championships and broadcasting, he made sure his girls knew that believing in yourself isn't just about sports - it's about life.

"My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person, he believed in me," he said. Maybe that's why, even after his passing in 1993, his daughters continue his legacy through the V Foundation, proving that when a father believes in his kids, that belief echoes for generations.

Upcycled Bar Cabinet

This isn't your typical liquor storage - it's a WWII jerry can turned conversation starter. Each cabinet comes with its original military ID and service papers, preserving history while holding your whiskey.

Built from authentic fuel cans, fitted with hardwood shelves and a mirror back. Locks with dog tag keys, because of course it does.

What Else We’re Eying Up:

Skip the Diet Drama

From liquid cleanses to celery juice, every decade brings a new miracle diet. Spoiler alert: they all worked until they didn't.

Here's what actually sticks:

  • Track what you eat (eye-opening stuff)

  • Build sustainable habits

  • Know your numbers

And please, eat the damn birthday cake. Life's too short for food guilt.

The Churchill Method

During WWII, Churchill had zero patience for bureaucracy. His solution? Red stickers reading "Action This Day" that he'd slap on urgent documents.

When his code-breakers needed resources, he didn't schedule a meeting about scheduling meetings.

He wrote one line: "Action this day! Make sure they have all they want on extreme priority."

Sometimes less process, more action is the answer.

Spaces that make you want to stay a while

At Montana's Ranch at Rock Creek, they turn your kids into mini-rangers while you decide between fly fishing and sporting clays. Spread across 6,600 acres, it's where luxury meets actual adventure.

The genius move? Their Flint's Forest Rangers program gets kids learning survival skills and ranch life while you're sneaking off to mountain bike.
